Bonding games for popular comics, movies, and TV shows are a popular video game genre, as the familiarity with the game’s plot and gameplay style makes it a compelling purchase for many gamers, like the new Gotham Knights, which takes place in the Batman. universe. Less popular, however, are games based on reality shows, some of which may surprise game fans and reality TV itself.

Although many reality shows have a concept of competition on the show, it doesn’t always translate into gameplay. Some of them don’t have much to do with the show they’re based on or are a pretty wacky concept for a video game.

Dancing with the stars

The dance competition show Dancing With The Stars has produced several video game tie-ins. The first, a 2007 game for PlayStation 2, came with a dance mat and used the standard arrow-based dance gameplay seen in other popular games like Dance Dance Revolution.

While it’s a rather loose connection to the show’s ballroom dancing, an even stranger connection is the game’s modern version, available on mobile and tablet. In the game, dance moves are “completed” when players move tiles to match multiple jewels together, making the gameplay little to do with dancing.

Cesar Millan’s Dog Whisperer

Cesar Millan’s Dog Whisperer was one of the most popular animal reality TV shows of the 2000s, featuring canine expert and animal behaviorist Cesar Millan encountering dogs with behavioral issues, before teaching owners tips and tricks for getting dogs to obey commands. As a game, it looks a bit like Nintendogs and its animal training gameplay, but that wasn’t the case for the 2008 game.

In the game, players encounter various dogs and are tasked with performing diagnostics and helping the dog’s behavior improve. The gameplay involves the player flipping through the list of possible diagnoses and trying them on for size, then the dog’s mood will improve after a brief practice. The game is rather boring and lacks the Nintendogs bonus of being able to babysit or play with the cute dog.

american idol

American Idol was one of the must-have reality shows of the 2000s, helping launch the careers of artists like Kelly Clarkson and Adam Lambert. Its popularity has helped it launch games on multiple platforms – including PC, GameBoy, PS2, etc. – but without the player actually singing.

Typically, gameplay involves a cross on the screen, where players must select buttons in the correct place on the cross, or ass notes will be sung. Not only is it boring and repetitive, but it’s a step down from other more engaging song-based games like SingStar.

duck dynasty

Duck Dynasty was one of the most popular reality shows of the 2010s. The show follows the Robertson family and their duck hunting business. It doesn’t naturally feel like PS4 gaming hardware – and for good reason.

The game involves players taking on the role of John Luke, the teenage son of one of the leading duck hunters who will eventually take over the family business. Players will go on boat rides and hunt beavers, frogs, but especially ducks – and that’s about it.

Love Island: The Game

Based on the UK version of the popular romance-reality series, Love Island: The Game is remarkably similar in style and gameplay to the story-based mobile games of Episode. Players have a number of moments to make the choice to change the scenario of the game – for example, kissing or rejecting another islander.

As with most interactive story games, the reality of in-game options is quite limited, while being mostly point-and-click. Many options hide behind a paywall, making the reality of choice even narrower for most players.

Hell’s Kitchen

Hell’s Kitchen has made Gordon Ramsay a source of countless memes – thanks to his famously fiery temper and witty catchphrases. In the show, a number of aspiring chefs hope to survive the heat of the kitchen until the end and be crowned the winners, rewarded with a job at one of Ramsay’s restaurants, as well as a cash prize. impressive.

In the game, players can either help build the reputation of the restaurant or attempt to complete all dishes in time for service. The gameplay is much stronger than the average reality TV tie-in, but it’s still pretty wacky. After all, it’s not every day that the game’s main character will call the player a donkey for not cooking the pasta properly.

Survivor: the interactive game

Survivor is one of the longest-running reality shows of all time, and the show is currently in its 43rd season. The series features a number of contestants stranded on a deserted island, and Survivor’s goal is to complete various tasks, including mental and physical challenges, and to provide food and shelter.

The game tie-in does much the same as the show – but doesn’t actually work, resulting in the game being slammed by reviewers. Many players have complained that the characters are so unintelligent that it actually impairs gameplay, and the graphics make it hard to see what’s going on.

The single person

The Bachelor reality series is a mix between two popular genres of reality TV – competition and romance. In the show, a number of contestants compete to win the affection of a male “bachelor” through dates and a series of challenges, being eliminated one by one.

The game, in theory, should be like the show – but it’s far from it. Rather than The Sims-style gameplay where the player can build a relationship with the NPC through interactions and the similarities of their personalities, players must engage in a number of unrelated mini-games to level up. and win the bachelor’s heart.

Kim Kardashian: Hollywood

Kim Kardashian: Hollywood lets players be the protege of the world’s most famous reality TV star, Kim Kardashian, who shot to fame on the hit show Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Players will start as “E-List” celebrities and can progress through the world of Hollywood by performing a number of tasks, such as fashion photo shoots or working in the Dash store, the family clothing store featured on Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

The game is, strangely, highly addictive – perhaps in part due to the fact that players frequently have to return to the game when their energy is restored in order to complete tasks. However, players should not expect prestige games, as the storyline is quite flat and many of the game’s bonuses are behind a paywall.

Wipeout: the game

Wipeout is a game show where aspiring contestants hope to beat a huge obstacle cost faster than other contestants and get to the end without failing any of the obstacles. Typically, Wipeout winners are in very good physical shape to perform the demanding tasks of the game.

Wipeout game on Nintendo Wii and DS does not involve any physical effort unlike other games like Wii Sports. Nonetheless, Wipeout: The Game was hugely popular, spawning several sequels on several new platforms. The game is popular as a multiplayer party game, though it’s mostly about pressing buttons and standing still.

Why would we want a return of The House of the Dead?

I don’t pretend to know everything about everything, but I do know at least one thing, and that is that the Rail Shooter is cool. So yes, it sounds like a kid’s sentence, devoid of deep meaning, and somewhere, I’m as much guided by emotion as by truth. Because I’m a great lover of the genre, of course, and its decline is as friendly to me as the death of the film licenses purchased by Disney. In other words, like many others, I cry tears of blood in front of a The House of the Dead Remakewho defecated on the grave of his late franchise.

Because you have to know that it was not nothing, The House of the Dead, in 1996. The arcade was slowly beginning to decline, with the importance that the personal game console now assumed, yet the genre and some of its representatives will give it a new lease of life, in the same way as certain fighting games. Very quickly, console versions are started, and this is how the general public discovered some legendary titles. Notably The House of the Dead 2 on Dreamcast, or Time Crisis on Playstation.

But it’s 2022, and the genre has been losing its luster for a while. The House of the Dead too. The gossips will say that it is due to the death of the Wii, and they would not be wrong, but the series continued a bit on PlayStation 3 thereafter. Before offering an episode that may have sealed the fate of the franchise forever. At least, that’s kind of how I see it, and I’m sure I’m not the only one, so much this remake received average and bad reviews, like ours which was not tender. Hope is dying, but the desire for a return is there…

The Rail Shooter is dead, long live the Rail Shooter

Among the video game genres in agony, in addition to the breakout game and the puzzle game that have their audience on smartphones, we find the Rail Shooter. A category that made the heyday of arcade terminals, mainly in the 90s, with licenses that then invested the console, carried by various accessories. And if we talk about agony, it’s because the Rail Shooter, as popular as it was twenty-two years ago, is dead.

So let’s be clear, several games are still coming out on consoles, and even on mobiles. And some are not huge turds. But the genre is no longer evolving, releases are extremely rare, and no one in the industry wants to take a serious interest in it. It is to believe that the death of the Nintendo Wii has definitely closed the door to new Rail Shooters worthy of the name. At the same time, this little white console had a nice catalog of them and lent itself perfectly to it…

And the reasons that hinder the return of this genre are legion. For one thing, it doesn’t get great press. There were many releases on the Wii, the console that will see the most of them, but the critical feedback is uneven. Content is often to blame, the Rail Shooter having as a recurring objective the replayability through the score. A concept that worked well on terminals, but which loses much of its meaning on consoles. But the main argument against it, in general, is the need to own an accessory to be able to take full advantage of it.

Hence the appearance of so many Shooters on the Wii, which avoided the purchase of an accessory with its relatively comfortable Motion Gaming. And some of them are really really cool. We can quote you the classics The House of the Dead 2 & 3, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and its sequel, or Ghost Squad. But if only two were to be retained, then we would of course tell you about the hilarious The House of the Dead: Overkillabsolutely jubilant, and exceptional Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Skies, an absolute masterpiece. A little nod to the latest column.

No accessory allowing the Rail Shooter exists on current consoles, and for good reason, they have practically no representative of the genre in their libraries. None that are really worth the detour, for the moment, and it is not The House of the Dead Remake who will say otherwise. Its Motion Gaming, on the Switch version, works very poorly, and the controller gameplay, at Sony and Microsoft, is terribly frustrating. Which will always be the case, as long as the Rail Shooter goes more in the direction of a Time Crisis only one starfox.

It is perhaps there, the biggest bolt that blocks the progression of the genre. Its desire to reproduce an arcade-style recipe, preventing it from fully reaching the console public. Some preferred to opt for the gameplay of a Space Harrier, allowing you to control the movements of your character and your aim, a sort of evolution of Shoot’em Up. A concept that will take up starfox on Super Nintendo, before being embellished by Sin and Punishment to the death of the Nintendo 64. However, who would want to play a game designed for the hollow plastic gun of the arcade with a simple controller, a joystick? Nobody of thought…

The House of the Dead, stuck in the past

The house of the dead

Whether The House of the Dead has such an aura, which its opportunistic and detestable film adaptations will not contradict, it is largely because its first opus hits hard. It’s not super pretty, you have to admit, but it’s fluid, gory and enjoyable. We dismember zombies in packs of six, we blow up small elements of the decor to recover bonuses or items, and we face big bosses with a neat design. Even the artistic direction of the app gives it a certain charm.

And on the gameplay side, it’s super simple, for immediate handling. Each arcade cabinet has two guns, meaning two players can cooperate. On this big, somewhat cheap accessory, only two buttons: one to reload, and a trigger to fire. The rest will be done by means of the pointer, in other words by aiming. The little twist is the division of the levels into different routes to explore. Some branches will unlock under certain conditions, often requiring speed and skill.

A recipe that will be repeated line by line The House of the Dead 2 and The House of the Dead 3, still on arcade machines, incorporating even more gore. But what about the console versions, will you tell me? Well, that’s where the shoddy accessories of the 90s come in. On Saturn, the first opus is worn properly, and works with a controller. The console having been entitled to at least one plastic gun, it is also possible to play it in conditions closer to what the original arcade terminal offers.

It is the same for The House of the Dead 2 on Dreamcast and The House of the Dead 3 on Xbox. But where the series really takes off on console is obviously when these two opuses came out on Wii, on the same DVD. A boon for all lovers of the license and the genre, and a perfect opportunity for Sega to introduce its franchise to a wider audience. And we have to believe that it paid off, since a year later, the Japanese giant published The House of the Dead: Overkillconsidered by many to be the best episode of the seriesdespite the distance it takes from the original recipe.

I allow myself a small aside on this game, and this for two reasons. The first, because it’s really very good, and it doesn’t seem to have worked that well. It’s a shame, because in addition to being enjoyable, the title tells a story that is pleasant to follow, but above all tinged with a humor that is both second degree and trashy which works very well with the grain of its image giving it a very nice grindhouse aspect. The second, because it’s a version designed for the console. Everything is adapted to the consumption of the video game in his sofa, from the interface to the way he has to tell his story, through the possibility of buying and improving a small gallery of weapons. A great conversion!

Finally, the series has failed on the bench of remakes in recent months, with the soberly titled The House of the Dead Remake on all media on the market. A version brought up to date, at least on paper, because in practice we rather have the impression of having lost in quality despite the facelift a bit questionable. However, these days, a license like this does not need a disappointing episode to end in the closet, perhaps permanently. And we are entitled to wonder what will become The House of the Dead after such a critical failure. It smells bad.

Petition for a Wii 2.0

The house of the dead

We’re not going to lie to each other, it doesn’t smell good for the Rail Shooter. The video game industry is slowly but surely abandoning the genre, after giving it a bit of credit on Nintendo Wii (and a little on PlayStation 2 too). And that’s really a shame, because it automatically puts a bunch of really cool licenses on the shelf, like Time Crisis Where The House of the Dead. And even some very Japanese experiences, like Resident Evil: Dead Aim. While we’re at it, did you know that even dead space was entitled to his Rail Shooter? A fairly refreshing experience, available on Wii and PS3 (playable on PS Move).

Gentlemen at Sega, although you are unlikely to come across these few scribbled lines on a whim on a Monday afternoon, I want to express to you my love for the series, and my dissatisfaction with the cold future that seems to be the future. ‘expect. So ok, is not Guitar Hero wants. It’s far from easy to release a title accompanied by an accessory today. It would require expensive communication, for a product itself expensive which would not be certain to cover its costs. The calculation is quickly done.

But since that’s the concept of this column, we’re still going to tell you what we’d like to see in a potential new opus. To begin with, it would be necessary to take up the tone of The House of the Dead: Overkill, and ideally his Special Agent G who is hilarious. It would also need a recognizable artistic direction, why not something a little penciled, while not forgetting to represent the gore in an exaggerated way, to the point that it is ridiculous. And we would have to think about its progression and its replayability so that they are suitable for the console.

In other words, don’t bet everything on scoring, but think about incorporating a screenplay red thread, with cutscenes not telling too much about the lore, but highlighting a certain humor. Add some mechanics that make you want to come back to the game, such as a weapon improvement system, collectibles, various bonuses. And of course, we must not forget the cooperation with two players (minimum) on the same screen. Without that, the genre loses a lot of its flavor, don’t you think?

Finally, we would like, for once, Sega to release its game on consoles with a dedicated accessory. A nice, cheap gun, with exposed welds and a trigger that clicks, just like it did back then.. An ugly thing, whatever, that doesn’t cost the publisher much, but that allows us, players, to have a great time knocking out everything that moves in a new game. Killing Two Birds with One Stone: Giving Fans a New The House of the Deadand pave the way for other similar licenses.

Game News Resident Evil ? Alone in the Dark? History’s First Horror Video Game Isn’t What You Think

For many players, survival-horror was born in the forest of Raccoon City in 1996 (Resident Evil), in the bowels of the Derceto mansion in 1992 (Alone in the Dark), even in the painter Mamiya’s mansion (Sweet Home) . However, the foundations of the horror genre in the world of video games emerged as early as 1981. With Haunted House, James Andreasen tried to make our hair stand on end through a dozen colors and coarse blocks. Open your eyes wide, strike a match, we go back to the origins of pixelated terror by entering the most famous haunted house of the Atari 2600.

Summary

  • Before Raccoon City, there was Spirit Bay
  • Haunted House, vintage angst
  • The footprint of a monster from the past

Before Raccoon City, there was Spirit Bay

Although it may make you smile to see the screenshots available in this article, haunted house features a story, described in the title’s user manual. At that time, there were no cutscenes to introduce the player to the universe, and ingame explanatory texts were still rare. But back to our sheep, or rather, to our ghosts. In the small town of Spirit Bay, an old house in ruins is the source of the craziest rumors.

It is said indeed that the pieces of a magic urn having belonged to the first family of the city would be hidden in the corridors of the residence. A priceless item that treasure hunters would love to collect, but there’s a catch. It is also said that the building is haunted by evil spirits. Some witnesses swear they heard disturbing sounds, while others claim to have seen shadows running through the mansion. The character embodied by the player decides to take his courage with both hands and go inside the house. What his matches will reveal is far worse than the hallway rumors implied. : warlike tarantulas, bloodthirsty vampire bats and even the aggressive ghost of the former owner populate the premises.

Resident Evil ? Alone in the Dark? History's First Horror Video Game Isn't What You Think

Haunted House, vintage angst

The title developed by James Andreasen for the Atari 2600 takes the form of an arcade game seen from above. Large homogeneous blocks represent the walls of the building, while two huge staring eyes symbolize the hero. The objective is to collect the three pieces of the urn and bring them back to the main entrance of the mansion without using all of the 9 lives provided. Findables, which only reveal themselves when the player approaches them with a lit match, are randomly scattered throughout the mansion’s 24 rooms, which are connected by hallways and stairs.

It would be easy to accomplish the mission if there were not locked doors (to be opened once in possession of the master key) and if demonic creatures were not lurking in every corner. Fortunately, a scepter to recover, hidden in the house, makes it possible to push back the adversaries. However, since the main protagonist can only pick up one item at a time, it is not possible to collect the pieces of the urn if the scepter is already equipped. When a dark force enters a room, the player’s flame is extinguished. He must therefore relight a match to see the walls of the building again and try to get out of this labyrinth in one piece.

Resident Evil ? Alone in the Dark? History's First Horror Video Game Isn't What You ThinkResident Evil ? Alone in the Dark? History's First Horror Video Game Isn't What You Think

The footprint of a monster from the past

Haunted House’s mechanics, while rudimentary, introduced an angst-based playstyle that left its mark. Like the survival-horror of the 1990s, we find a disturbing labyrinthine place plunged into darkness, low attack power, low health, an extremely limited inventory which forces you to make choices, and caused jumpscares by the appearance of enemies (sometimes triggering lightning). The software has nine game modes varying the rules, and therefore the level of difficulty.

And the 1972 Haunted House in all this?

Yes, there is a Haunted House game released in 1972 on the Magnavox Odyssey, and yes, it is a game set in a haunted mansion. Why don’t we consider it to be the first horror game in history? Quite simply because it is a multiplayer game that is ultimately very close to a board game. A player leads a detective and explores the rooms of a house (in overlay) until he comes across the ghost previously hidden by the second player.

Of course, Haunted House’s graphics keep James Andreasen’s creation from genuinely scaring anyone. The haunted mansion looks more like a cluster of large pixels than a gloomy building, the creatures are small sprites summarily animated (on two images), and the sounds struggle to create a disturbing atmosphere. In its defence, the software fits on a cartridge of only 4 KB. At this level, it is no longer concessions that must be made, but figurative.

The first man who found himself lost alone in the darkness in a survival game is therefore not Edward Carnby but indeed the wide-eyed hero of Haunted House. The software will experience a fairly confidential reboot in 2010 – 30 years after the original! – on PC, Wii and Xbox 360. If you have a strong heart (and an open mind), the original Atari 2600 title can be tested directly on browser by here.

Travis Touchdown is back and this time he fights with big names from galaxies far, far away. Just that ! To infinity and beyond !

More than fourteen years have passed since the release of the first opus of No More Heroes on Wii: an eternity in the life of a player. If the franchise has long been the preserve of Nintendo machines, this has not prevented the Grasshoper Manufacture studio from delivering such crazy epics on other home machines, especially on Xbox360 and PS3. For the record let’s mention games like Lollipop Chainsaw, Killer is Dead or even Shadows of the Damned. Nice titles that will have more or less marked the players… but not enough to launch the construction of a sequel. Too bad for them! If No More Heroes 3 was not put on the grill when it was released on Switch, for lack of sending of code by the editor / manufacturer, its arrival on the other platforms of the market (PlayStation and Xbox) gives the opportunity to try this encounter of the third type. Finally ! Thanks to its publisher for sending us a review code used on Xbox Series X. Was it really necessary to take out the heavy artillery from Microsoft?

Before starting the tour of the owner, we recall that the saga of No More Heroes invites us to follow the exploits of Travis Touchdown. A hitman full of style, talent but who turns out to be an incorrigible geek ascending looser/poissard. As in his previous adventures he will have to rub shoulders with ten ruthless killers from the confines of the galaxy to enslave the Earth… starting with Santa Destroy and its surroundings. Understand five adjoining cities that answer (for example) to the sweet name of Thunderdome, Perfect World or NeoBrazil.

If you wanted a change of scenery, you’re going to get it, because becoming the best assassin has to be earned. The game thus imposes to explore these imitation open world, empty to cry as at the time of the PlayStation 2, to accomplish main and secondary quests. Side quests that only have accessories in name. Since to access the confrontation against one of the bosses, you have to accumulate enough hard cash, eliminate a certain number of enemies and accomplish various tasks (unclog public toilets, mine minerals, etc.). Imposed figures which are undoubtedly intended to moderate the progress of the player since it is not the pseudo open worlds of No More Heroes 3 which will captivate you for a hundred hours. The title is thus flanked by a respectable and honest lifespan – for an action/adventure game – of a dozen hours. As mentioned above, Travis is a hitman who fights with a laser sword. He connects the movements with mastery when we alternate between fast and powerful blows. Beware of the breakdown! The sword’s battery drains quickly, and in the heat of the moment you’re sometimes forced to recharge it to keep attacking. In addition to his laser rapier, our hero can also use other powers (acid rain, slowing down time, super-powerful kick), even projections or don a combat suit (like Viewtiful Joe) straight out of the box a Gundam to unleash salvoes of missiles and laser beam shots. This game is crazy and always full of humor and a multitude of nods to Pop Culture and the division of the story into episodes worthy of an animated series still breathes a wind of madness into this No More Heroes 3. The experience remains on the whole quite pleasant once you get caught up in the game, you can only be a bit exasperated by the linearity and redundancy of its action. You have been warned!

1667092791 902 Test No Heroes 3 Never again never again

Fueling the Unreal Engine (the aging fourth revision), this NM3 tested on Xbox Series X unfortunately leaves the player little choice when it comes to fiddling with the display options. Understand that we cannot choose to favor the beauty of the rendering or the fluidity of the animation. Overall, the pseudo Cell Shadé rendering is pretty, colorful, clean, but like the scenery, it’s incredibly empty. A bad for a good. Unlike the Switch whose frame rate yoyoed, on Series X, the animation does not weaken even during the searing action scenes, the most intense and rich in hemoglobin effusion… stylized. Admittedly, it’s fluid, but during cutscenes we find this constant specific to the Unreal Engine, that of systematically applying higher resolution textures, 1 to 2 seconds after a change of shot/camera angle. Hard ! On the other hand, it is impossible not to find charm in the completely crazy chara design inspired by Polnareff’s Silver Chariot, the felt and other Space Sheriffs. A word on maneuverability. For the record, the first two components released on Wii took advantage of the motion recognition of the WiiMote. This is why Grasshoper Manufacture requires frequent use of the right analog stick to reload the laser sword or perform classy finishes. No More Heroes 3 relies – for the most part – on conventional gameplay, where attack, dodge and jump functions are placed on the ABXY keys or other geometrically shaped keys if you’re playing on PlayStation. Appearance a bit frustrating, the loading times are sometimes quite “long” in view of what the console sometimes finds itself displaying the ruins of a city drowned in fog.

See as well

1667092793 717 Test No Heroes 3 Never again never again

If the title also offers to trudge through the cities aboard a motorized vehicle (a three-wheeled motorcycle) we can only experience a feeling of annoyance as soon as we try to venture off the trails beaten. Especially when, in the middle of the salty desert worthy of Utah, our overpowered nitro-boosted machine stalls in front of a tiny mound that separates us from a mission/point of interest. Ridiculous ! Let’s put it down to a management of physics reduced to its simplest expression. On the sound design side, no concessions. Certainly the game does not offer voices in French. But the menus inspired by the monochrome interface of a Mac OS 5 (or 6) and the dialogs are fortunately sub-titled in our beautiful language! As for the voices available in English and especially in Japanese, they fit perfectly with the protagonists who exude charisma through all the pores of their skin. Moreover, in addition to benefiting from devastating looks, Travis’ targets also have their own musical themes/styles. And this music with frenetic rhythms brings atmosphere to confrontations that are often spectacular and epic! Watch out for your eyes and ears!

1667092794 231 Test No Heroes 3 Never again never again
1667092794 341 Test No Heroes 3 Never again never again

Test – No Heroes 3 – Never again never again

CONCLUSION

If you like typical Japanese action-adventure games with poseurous and completely crazy heroes, No More Heroes 3 will fill you with happiness… provided you don’t hold it against its semblance of open worlds.

Most

Never two without three it’s nice to see Travis again

An often neat staging of many nods to pop culture

Well-punched music quality voices

The VF and oldschool Mac OS menu aesthetics

The lessers

Empty open worlds, Surprisingly long load times for Series X

Watch for a slight price drop if the technical constraints mentioned have tempered your enthusiasm

Around 4 p.m., the Seniors Domitys residence in Laillé, south of Rennes, comes to life. A sweet smell of pancake floats in the air and a ballet of carers goes back and forth with meal trays between the kitchens and the main living room. In the large common room, while some pensioners are engaged in an endless game of dominoes, a rather noisy little group has formed in front of the large television.

Monique (70 years old) and Marcel (95 years old) will take part in the grand finale of the Silver Geek Seniors Trophy on Thursday November 3rd. (The Telegram/David Brunet)

In the center of all eyes: Monique Carreau, 70, and Marcel Bonomo, 95, play a game of bowling on Nintendo’s Wii console. On screen, their avatars chain strikes under the cheers of a handful of residents. Armed with their joysticks, the two retirees imitate the gesture of throwing to perfection… living up to their reputation.

A coronation in an incredible atmosphere at Stunfest

Because Monique and Marcel are not just anyone in the world of esports. Last May, they won the final of the Senior Silver Geek Nord-Ouest Trophy, organized at the Stunfest in Rennes. In a crowded room in the Cité and in front of an excited audience, the Breton pair brilliantly triumphed over all their opponents, even winning the final quite comfortably with a combined score of 330 points.

Marcel and Monique won the final of the Senior Silver Geek Nord-Ouest Trophy at the Stunfest in Rennes last May. (Stunfest)

A stunning performance when you know that the two friends had never played video games before this year. “At the beginning, things didn’t work out well,” remembers Monique. “I’ve bowled before, but it’s quite different with a controller… I often missed the pins. By dint of training, we managed to progress well.

Neck brace, cane and strikes

At Stunfest, the Breton duo also showed a steel mind when the general state of form was far from optimal. “Marcel hadn’t slept all night after a vaccine and I was wearing a neck brace because of tendonitis in my neck,” says Monique, interrupted in her story by loud applause at the back of the living room.

In front of the television, Marcel has just made several perfect shots in a row – triggering the congratulations of the other residents. “He’s the boss,” exclaims Jonathan Martin, animation coordinator of the residence. “When it’s started, we can’t stop it.” Despite his 95 years and his cane that accompanies him everywhere, the retiree regularly comes close to 200 points in one game. Something to impress his grandchildren yet far from penguins when it comes to video games.

Monique and Marcel are surrounded by Célina, Enisa and Marie, three young people in civic service who accompanied them on this crazy adventure.

Fighting the digital divide

“I have an infallible technique,” says Marcel behind his mischievous smile. “You have to be focused and not rush too much to play. Afterwards, you must not rotate your hand too much when you make the throwing gesture. If the ball is well oriented, it works every time”. When he talks about Wii Bowling, the nonagenarian beams.

If the two retirees were able to embark on this crazy adventure, it is thanks to the Silver Geek association and to Célina, Enisa and Marie, three young people in civic service in the residence who registered them for the competition last March. Created in 2018, the association carries out actions to fight against the digital divide and the isolation of the elderly.

Direction Paris for the grand national final

In some cases, introduction to video games also allows retirees to practice physical activity while having fun. “Wii Bowling is perfect because the game is easy to understand and it allows them to do a bit of sport at the same time”, explains Hugo Marolleau, communication manager for silver geek. “We also organize Just Dance sessions in certain establishments. It is important to highlight the playful side”.

Finally, the organization of competitions such as the Seniors Trophy makes it possible to publicize their actions and bring crazy epics to the participants. Thanks to their victory in Rennes, Marcel and Monique won their ticket to the grand national final of Paris Games Week at the Parc Expo in Porte de Versailles.

Thursday, November 3 at the end of the morning, they will face three other teams from all over France on the big stage in front of nearly a thousand spectators. “Going up to Paris is a bit stressful,” confides Marcel. “We will come up against very strong opponents so it will not be easy. But we hope to bring back the trophy because we have the support of everyone here”.

Broadcast on Twitch and Youtube, the competition will also be broadcast live in the living room of the Laillé residence. Several hundred kilometers away, the Monique and Marcel fan club, which has already prepared the support signs for the occasion, promises to give voice to support its stars.

A small and inexpensive arcade racing game, does that tell you? Attention, I did not say that it was good for all that!

One Hell of a Ride is an arcade racing game where you have to reach the finish line first. The concept of the game is super simple. There is a single game mode for a single player where you will have to chain 25 different events. And that’s about it. Do not look for free race, timer, local or online multi mode. No, nothing, nada. This is the bare minimum!

I took out my PS2? Nope !

Also, don’t expect to play on 25 different tracks. No, don’t dream. Basically, there are about 5 tracks that loop through the campaign. A bit repetitive, no? But hey, it’s still a small game on a low budget and sold cheap. You have to be a little lenient… or not. One Hell of a Ride sells itself in the store listing by barely covertly talking about Carmaggedon and Twisted Metal. Yes but no. We are far from the delirium of these two games (which also have their faults elsewhere). One Hell of a Ride is very wise next to these two titles. It is even indicated on this same sheet that they should have called their game Heavy Metal Racing: but why not have done so??? Yes, because the soundtrack is meant to be heavy metal and it’s true. It’s rock, there’s electric guitar, on this point, there’s a bit of rhythm even in the menu.

Nitro is good, missiles are better

In One Hell of a Ride, we chain races, and we must finish in the lead to unlock the next race and so on. Fortunately, by playing, you earn money. This will allow us to unlock new cars (there are 5 in all) and above all to be able to improve them. It will be possible to upgrade the nitro, the weapon, the engine, the armor, the suspensions or even the tires. It changes the gameplay a bit, but it’s not obvious, except for the nitro or the firing of our weapons. Indeed, it allows us to use several of them in each turn. As a result, we will be able to send nitro like Dom Toretto and above all launch missiles. The weapons are cheated elsewhere, they are different depending on the vehicle chosen but in general, it is a guided missile that can cross turns to reach its target. As a result, and to win, all you have to do is keep your stock of missiles for the end of the race and send all the mash at once to win!

1666928559 453 One Hell of a Ride Hell with four wheels

And one less

The gameplay is average. The title is easy to pick up, but slippages are handled oddly. We don’t really understand why suddenly, we pass a turn correctly by squeezing the buttocks and why another time, we find ourselves stuck in the wall. The other concern for the gameplay is the exterior view offered by default. The car is huge on screen and the camera tends to zoom all the time. You have to go straight to the bonnet view, which isn’t great, but at least it’s easier to control the vehicle. To avoid spoiling anything, be careful if you base yourself on the map to anticipate turns: on some circuits, it is upside down! I have never seen this before!

1666928559 279 One Hell of a Ride Hell with four wheels

I have a car that smells like heavy metal

Finally, how not to talk about the technique. One Hell of a Ride is a game that could have run on Wii. I’m just exaggerating. The game is downright ugly. The textures are dull, the colors drool and the modeling of the vehicles is ultra low cost. In short, it is not a canon of beauty.

So, in the end, we end up with a game that ends solo very quickly, then behind we have nothing more to do. And in addition, the game is ugly and not very pleasant to play. So, ok, it’s not expensive, but unless you’re in need of cars driving on the circuit with heavy metal music in your ears, I wouldn’t recommend playing this really bad title at all.

Poland on Thursday dismantled four Communist-era monuments to Red Army soldiers in a renewed push to remove symbols of Moscow’s post-World War II dominance and underscore its condemnation of Moscow’s war on the neighboring Ukraine.

Workers used drills and heavy equipment to destroy 1945 monuments at four different locations across Poland. Most of them were in the form of concrete obelisks dedicated to fallen Red Army soldiers fighting to defeat Nazi German troops.

The head of the State Institute of National Remembrance, Karol Nawrocki, called for the expulsions. He said the monuments represented a system guilty of enslaving and murdering his own people and other nations, including the Poles.

“It’s a monument to disgrace, a monument to the victors’ contempt for the victims,” Nawrocki said in Glubczyce, southern Poland, as workers prepared to remove the figure of a soldier from the Red Army before dismantling the entire monument. .

“In 1945 the Soviets didn’t bring liberation, they brought another captivity. They were capturing Poland and treating it like booty,” Nawrocki said in a moving speech.

He said that the spirit of this system is still present in the Russian Federation, which kills civilians in Ukraine.

Nawrocki pointed out that Russian law prosecutes and provides up to three years in prison for anyone who removes Soviet military monuments, even in foreign countries.

The other monuments were removed from old burial sites in Byczyna in the southwest and Bobolice in the northwest. The soldiers’ remains were exhumed and moved to suitable graves in the 1950s. A stone monument was also dismantled in the woods near Staszow to the south.

The institute investigates and prosecutes Nazi and Communist crimes against Poles and commemorates national heroes who fought oppressors.

Since the abandonment of communist rule in 1989, Poland has taken steps to remove from public space the symbols of Moscow’s past domination, taking away monuments and plaques. Some have been moved to special storage. The reader does not include cemeteries or current burial sites.

Dokapon Kingdom was released on PS2 on November 22, 2007. It is a remake of the SNES game released in 1994. Developed by Sting Entertainment and Examu in Japan, the game will be released in the United States thanks to Atlus, and in Europe by BigBen Interactive. This remake was also released for Wii under the name Dokapon Kingdom for Wii.

The story of Dokapon Kingdom

The game takes place in a fictional country called “Dokapon Kingdom” who is attacked by an army of monsters. Seeing this, the king offers Penny, his daughter, in marriage to the player who completes the game with the most money. Adventurers hear this, and try to save the kingdom. Dokapon Kingdom can end in several different ways.

Features

This is a hybrid board game and role-playing game whose modes vary. The characters must choose a job at the beginning of the game (warrior, thief and magician) and evolve. Up to 11 jobs are unlockable! The story mode sees four players given a mission. Players spin a wheel and then move to the place on the board that they can reach by moving a certain number of squares. Players will have the freedom to choose the direction they want to take. Landing on an “empty” yellow space or another player will usually cause a fight.

Sometimes the player will encounter a strange traveler. He will allow you to play a mini-game, hire his services to steal or harm other players. The combat system takes place in the style roshambo (stone, paper, scissors) with the affinities that we know about it. Multi-magic and status changes play out both in combat and on the game board. Class-specific skills increase with the player’s job level.

[ARTICLE INITIALEMENT PUBLIÉ LE 18 FÉVRIER ET MIS À JOUR LE 19 JUILLET]

You might not know it, but the Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS haven’t breathed their last breaths yet. The two consoles, somewhat unloved in the company’s long line, still have their followers. And it’s them that Nintendo is gently preparing for the inevitable.

At the end of March 2023, it will no longer be possible to buy games on these two consoles, explained the company in February. The end of the Wii U and the 3DS has sounded, the fault of the overwhelming success of the Switch, now Nintendo’s best-selling home console.

Progressive service limitations

Until now, it was still possible for owners of the Wii U home console and those of 3DS portable consoles to buy games on the Nintendo eShop and enjoy game demos or downloadable content for free. In March 2023, it will be over.

1666834628 488 Nintendo Wii U and 3DS you will soon no longer

But Nintendo also warns players of several deadlines by then and the end of associated services (the StreetPass Mii Plaza, Theme Shop and Nintendo Badge Arcade platforms are also concerned). It is no longer possible to add funds to your Nintendo eShop account on the consoles concerned via credit card.

  • As of August 29, 2022, Nintendo eShop Cards will no longer be able to be linked to the account on a Wii U or Nintendo 3DS/2DS family systems. The download codes, however, remain valid until the end of March 2023.
  • The game Fire Emblem Fates will be withdrawn from sale on February 28, 2023. Its additional content, including the paths that can be followed after completing Chapter 6 of the game, will be available for purchase until March 27, 2023.
  • As of March 27, 2023, it will no longer be possible to purchase content. Nintendo says, however, that it will still be possible to redownload games and downloadable content for some time, to receive software updates and to use online gaming features on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS consoles.

Note that this situation will apply to portable consoles New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 2DS XL, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL and Nintendo 2DS, as well as Wii U Deluxe and Wii U home consoles.

However, if you have a Nintendo Switch and an associated Nintendo Account on the eShop, your balance can be used to purchase content on your Wii U and 3DS until term.

Nintendo also specifies that previously purchased content and games can be redownloaded without time limits, software updates will continue and that online play on Wii U remains active.
